Standard #6: Assessment

As stated in the Arkansas Teaching Standards (2012):
The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher’s and learner’s decision making
As applied in my Internship:
Assessment in a choral environment is an ongoing process that should be happening every time the teacher is with the choir. The best way that I can describe it is that choral assessment is like being a medical professional. You are constantly assessing your patients and prescribing medicines to combat the sickness. As a choral director, it is my job to listen to my choirs, constantly assess what is wrong, and then give detailed and clear instruction on why something was wrong and what to do to fix the problems. Other assessments such as concert assessments where judges grade choirs and directors based on presentation, performance, and sight reading are also used. During my internship after concert assessment we had the students self assess their choir's performance as well as their own individual performances to understand what they need to improve on. Additional assessments that I would like to do with my future choirs include part tests that can be organized a multitude of ways: individual, 4 part, 8 part, etc. This form of assessment allows students to learn how to cooperate together and allows me as a director to understand what parts or individuals need help the most; or what part of the music needs the most work. Online sight singing assessments have grown in popularity as technology has become more readily available and can provide well needed support towards students' sight singing skills. Finally, formal written assessments can be used to assess students' growth in musicianship. Musical terminology that is covered in class or evaluation of different choirs that might have performed the pieces that are assigned to the choir at that time can be great ways to provide assessment for students that learn more efficiently through writing.
